SWIEQI BOSS LIAM MANGION REFLECTS AFTER HEARTBREAKING SEASON END

Swieqi United FC manager Liam Mangion has reflected on a dramatic and emotional season following a heartbreaking end to their promotion hopes.
In a message shared after the decisive clash, Mangion described the campaign as one he “will carry forever,” praising his team’s resilience in the face of adversity. Swieqi endured a challenging season, losing four key players to serious injuries and suffering a three-point deduction, yet still managed to fight their way to a play-off decider.
The one-off showdown came after a fiercely contested Challenge League race, with both Swieqi and Birżebbuġa St Peter’s FC pushing until the very end. Backed by a passionate southern support, Birżebbuġa seized a historic opportunity, earning promotion to the Malta Premier League for the first time in their history after triumphing on penalties.
For Swieqi, the defeat was a bitter blow. “To come so close, only to lose on penalties, is a pain that will stay with us,” Mangion admitted, while acknowledging the harsh realities of football.
Despite the disappointment, Mangion expressed pride in his squad, staff, and supporters, thanking the Swieqi community for their unwavering backing. He also congratulated Birżebbuġa and Balzan FC on their promotion.
Looking ahead, Mangion remains determined. With lessons learned and hunger renewed, he insists Swieqi will return stronger, setting their sights firmly on the 2026/27 season.
