Strong Winds and Tight Racing Define 2026 EurILCA Masters in Malta

The 2026 EurILCA Masters Series opened in Malta with a demanding yet highly successful regatta hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club. A diverse international fleet — including newly elected ILCA President Mark Lyttle — faced two days of intense racing marked by powerful winds, shifting conditions and tactical pressure.
Friday’s opening races off Dragonara Point tested sailors with unstable westerly gusts reaching 25 knots and swells of up to two metres. Despite several retirements, the Race Committee, led by Martin Azzopardi, completed both scheduled races. With offshore conditions worsening on Saturday, racing moved into Marsamxett Harbour, where shifting 15–25 knot breezes continued to challenge the fleet.
The ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 standings saw major reshuffles as consistency proved crucial. With Sunday’s severe weather forcing cancellation of further racing, results were decided on four completed heats. Club officials praised volunteers and safety teams for ensuring fair, safe competition, while Yachting Malta highlighted the island’s unique ability to host racing despite Europe‑wide storms.
