Stephen Grima Begins 4 Islands Epic Race In Croatia

Maltese mountain biker Stephen Grima is set to take on a new challenge as he lines up for the 2026 4 Islands Epic in Croatia, alongside teammate Mario Matulović, racing under Team Gaudos.

The five-day stage race, which runs from 14 to 18 April, is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive events on the global mountain biking calendar.

Known for its demanding terrain and scenic routes, the race spans approximately 300 kilometres and 6,500 metres of climbing across the Kvarner Islands.

Starting in Baška on the island of Krk and finishing in Mali Lošinj, riders will tackle a mix of steep ascents from sea level and technical rocky trails.

Highlights include the stark Moon Plateau, the exposed cliffs of Cres, a time trial on the island of Unije, and a challenging final stage on Lošinj.

The race follows a team-based format, requiring pairs to remain together throughout each stage, placing equal emphasis on teamwork and endurance.

Off the course, competitors experience a unique travelling race village, with ferry transfers and seaside accommodation adding to the event’s adventurous appeal.

Grima enters the race in strong form, having recently completed the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa for the second consecutive year.

His performance there further cements his reputation as one of Malta’s most resilient endurance athletes, heading into Croatia with confidence and race-hardened fitness.
