SOPHIE ST JOHN AND JACOB MICALLEF NAMED ŻAGĦŻUGĦA TAS-SENA AND ŻAGĦŻUGĦ TAS-SENA

The 66th edition of the Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali, organised by the Malta Sports Journalists Association, celebrated the outstanding achievements of Malta’s young sporting talent, crowning Sophie St John and Jacob Micallef as Żagħżugħa tas-Sena and Żagħżugħ tas-Sena, respectively.
Fourteen-year-old artistic gymnast Sophie St John was recognised for her remarkable performances throughout the year, including a standout showing at the Games of the Small States of Europe in Andorra, where she won five medals, three of them gold. Her skill, determination, and composure under pressure earned her widespread admiration and mark her as one of Malta’s brightest sporting prospects.
Meanwhile, young racing driver Jacob Micallef received the Żagħżugħ tas-Sena award for his exceptional talent and determination on the track. Set to compete in the F4 Spanish Championship with Campos Racing, Micallef has quickly emerged as one of Malta’s most promising motorsport athletes, following in the footsteps of his father, 2017 FIA European Top Fuel champion Duncan Micallef.
The recognition of St John and Micallef underscores the growing depth of young talent in Maltese sport, signalling a bright future for the nation’s next generation of athletes.
