Second Edition of Żebbuġ Cycling Race Raises the Bar for Local Cycling

The town of Żebbuġ came alive last Sunday as it hosted the second edition of the Żebbuġ Cycling Race, delivering a full day of high-speed competition and building anticipation ahead of the upcoming International Tour ta’ Malta later this month.
Backed by title sponsor Würth and organised by Team Greens in collaboration with the Żebbuġ Local Council, Greens Supermarket and Transport Malta, the event once again proved a major success. Strong participation across all categories, perfect spring weather, and large crowds created an electric atmosphere on the rural circuit.
The Men’s Elite race provided one of the highlights of the day, with aggressive early racing setting a relentless pace. The decisive move came with five laps remaining when Luke Borg attacked, before Aidan Buttigieg of Polti VisitMalta and Jacob Schembri of Bike It Up Racing joined the break. Buttigieg ultimately powered to victory, securing his first win of the season ahead of Schembri and Borg.
In the Masters category, Team Greens’ Arek Kawalec took top honours, with teammate Gesred Borg second and Liran Ben Ari third. Diana Muscat continued her strong form in the women’s race, claiming a second consecutive win after edging out Krista Kuusijarvi in the final stages.
Elsewhere, victories went to Ryan Gatt in the Junior race, David Cushing in the 50+ category, and several emerging talents impressed across the youth categories.
Organisers praised the growing success of the event, highlighting its strong community impact and rising standard, as the Żebbuġ Cycling Race continues to establish itself as a key fixture in Malta’s cycling calendar.
