Maltese swimmer Samuel Camilleri achieved an important milestone at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Friday, 6 November, qualifying for the final of the men's 200m butterfly event.

Camilleri delivered a determined performance in the morning heats, clocking 2 minutes 12.90 seconds to finish fourth in his heat and secure the eighth and final qualifying position.

The result earned him a place among the eight finalists competing for honours at the prestigious international event in Senegal.

The young swimmer faced strong international opposition, including competitors from Colombia, Egypt, India, Brazil and Vietnam.

Camilleri had also represented Malta earlier in the Games in the 400m freestyle event, recording a time of 4:23.08.
