Maltese squash enjoyed a successful outing at the Croatian Junior Open held in Zagreb, with standout performances from Mattea Saliba and Julian Scerri.

Saliba’s achievement was particularly remarkable. After spending a full year recovering from an ACL injury sustained in January 2025, she made an emphatic return to international competition. Competing in the Girls Under-19 category despite playing above her age group, Saliba produced a flawless run, defeating every opponent to secure the title. Her victory marked an inspiring comeback and a significant milestone in her young career.

Scerri also impressed throughout the tournament, finishing as runner-up in what is his final year on the European Junior Squash Circuit. His campaign was highlighted by a gruelling 93-minute, five-game victory over Kin Fung Ma, the longest match of both the tournament and his career. He went on to reach the final, where he faced the French number two, ultimately earning a well-deserved silver medal after a competitive four-game encounter.

Both athletes demonstrated resilience, determination, and high-level performance on the international stage. Their achievements continue to underline the progress of Maltese squash and serve as inspiration for upcoming players representing the island.
