Rylee Borg leads Malta to overall victory in Slovakia

Rylee Borg delivered a standout performance at the European Union Weightlifting Championship in Bobrov, Slovakia, claiming first place overall and leading Malta to the top of the podium. Borg completed all six lifts successfully, registering 127kg in the Snatch and 169kg in the Clean & Jerk. After trailing his Austrian rival early on, he produced a superb Clean & Jerk series to secure Malta’s gold.

The final standings saw Malta take first place, followed by Austria and Romania. Borg also teamed up with Kim Camilleri Lagana in the doubles competition, where the Maltese pair earned an impressive silver medal.

There were encouraging results across the Maltese squad. Nathan Mifsud finished fourth, missing the podium by just 0.8 points, while Gabriele Frendo, Mia Sant and Emily Livori gained valuable international experience. Malta also placed fifth in the mixed team competition, rounding off a strong collective showing.

The team’s participation was supported by the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta, marking another important step forward for Maltese weightlifting.
