Residents Push Back Against Pembroke Land Transfer to Valletta FC

A petition opposing the transfer of undeveloped land in Pembroke to Valletta Football Club has gathered significant momentum, with 444 signatures recorded so far. As Times of Malta is reporting, residents are objecting to government plans to allocate the site for a new “football campus”, a project announced earlier this year by Prime Minister Robert Abela.
Led by long‑time resident Rita Zammit, the petition argues that the land — described as “beautiful virgin territory” — should be safeguarded, especially given its proximity to a Natura 2000 protected zone. Zammit told Times of Malta that the area has faced repeated development attempts over the past 30 years, including a controversial school proposal in 2017 that residents successfully opposed.
The petition warns of increased traffic, noise, light pollution and long‑term environmental impact, urging parliament to postpone any land transfer until a full environmental and social impact assessment is completed. Residents also criticised the local council for not taking a clear stance, noting that the petition was only shared publicly after media inquiries.
The issue continues to stir debate as Pembroke residents push for transparency and the preservation of one of the locality’s last remaining open spaces.
