Raymond Vella honoured with Assikura Merit Award

Raymond Vella, one of the most celebrated figures in Maltese football history, has been awarded the Assikura Merit Award, a recognition that reflects his immense impact on the local game. Widely regarded as one of Malta’s finest midfielders, Vella enjoyed a distinguished career for both Ħamrun Spartans and the Malta National Team, leaving a legacy built on leadership, intelligence and exceptional technical ability.
A central figure in Ħamrun’s golden era of the 1980s and early 1990s, Vella was instrumental in the club’s domestic dominance, guiding the Spartans through some of their most successful seasons. His influence extended to the international stage, where he earned 67 caps for Malta between 1984 and 1994, captaining the side and becoming a respected leader on and off the pitch.
Renowned for his vision, passing range and composure, Vella was twice named MFA Footballer of the Year in 1987 and 1991, underlining his status as one of the era’s standout performers.
His nomination for the MFPA Merit Award 2026 was met with warm applause, a fitting tribute to a player whose contribution shaped generations. For Maltese football supporters, Raymond Vella remains a symbol of excellence, professionalism and enduring passion for the game.
