Ray Grech Crowned National Backyard Ultra Champion at 52

Maltese endurance athlete Ray Grech has achieved a remarkable milestone after being crowned the 2026 National Backyard Ultra Champion at the recent I Endure Backyard Ultra 2026.

At 52 years old, Grech demonstrated extraordinary physical endurance and mental resilience, completing 34 loops covering approximately 228 kilometres over 34 hours.

His outstanding performance also secured qualification for the prestigious 2027 Backyard Ultra Individual World Championship, scheduled to take place in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, USA.

The Backyard Ultra format challenges competitors to complete a 6.706-kilometre loop every hour, with the competition continuing until only one athlete remains.

Beyond his personal triumph, Grech highlighted the exceptional camaraderie, determination and team spirit displayed by fellow Maltese athletes throughout the event.

“This achievement is not just about individual success, but also about the incredible support and encouragement shared among athletes,” Grech said.

His accomplishment represents another significant milestone for Malta's growing ultra-distance running community, demonstrating that age is no obstacle to achieving ambitious sporting goals.

Grech hopes his success will inspire others to embrace endurance challenges while bringing greater recognition to a demanding sporting discipline that continues to gain popularity in Malta.
