Preparations are progressing steadily for the 2025 edition of the traditional Boxing Day Football Tournament, an event organised annually by the Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA). This year’s tournament will once again adopt a quadrangular format, bringing together teams representing the Malta Football Referees Association, Members of Parliament, sports journalists from the MSJA, and—for the first time—TEAMmt, a squad made up of TV and media personalities.

The tournament continues a long‑standing tradition dating back to the 1970s, when the MSJA, then known as Għaqda Kittieba Sports, first invited referees for a friendly festive match. Despite a few interruptions over the decades, the collaboration between the MSJA and the MFRA has ensured the event remains a staple of Malta’s sporting calendar. Its evolution into a quadrangular tournament in later years has helped broaden participation and strengthen the sense of community the event is known for.

This year’s edition will take place at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Ħamrun, thanks to the support of the Ħamrun Spartans committee. As part of its charitable spirit, all participants will contribute to a collective donation towards Istrina, with spectators—who may attend free of charge encouraged to do the same.

The tournament will be held on Friday, 26 December, with the opening matches kicking off at 09:00. The President of Malta, Dr Miriam Spiteri Debono, will attend and officially start the second round of fixtures at 10:00.
