The Portuguese Grand Prix is set to return to the Formula One calendar for 2027 and 2028, following a two-year agreement confirmed by organisers on Tuesday. The race will take place at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, which previously hosted F1 during the Covid-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons, with both editions claimed by Lewis Hamilton.

Portugal has a long association with Formula One, having staged Grands Prix at Estoril between 1984 and 1996, as well as earlier races from 1958 to 1960 at different venues. The Algarve circuit, known for its undulating layout and dramatic corners, is expected to inject fresh excitement into the calendar and replace the Dutch Grand Prix, which is scheduled to be dropped after the 2026 season. The Dutch GP currently occupies a late August slot.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali praised the circuit, saying, “The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats.”

The announcement comes ahead of the 2026 season, which begins in Melbourne on March 8. Lando Norris, who clinched the drivers’ title in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, will return to defend his crown. The inclusion of Portimão marks a significant addition to the calendar, promising thrilling racing and a scenic location that has previously won fans and drivers alike.
