Opposition Leader Alex Borg has welcomed the Malta Football Association’s decision to appoint a working group tasked with drafting guidelines on sponsorships and affiliations within grassroots football. Borg described the move as “a step in the right direction,” particularly in light of recent public criticism surrounding a proposed sponsorship from the cannabis authority to football nurseries.

He noted that the committee’s composition led by Professor Andrew Azzopardi and including representatives from Caritas Malta, Agenzija Sedqa, the OASI Foundation, and the Office of the Commissioner for Children reflects the concerns raised by several organisations that had publicly opposed the sponsorship arrangement.

Borg said the MFA’s actions demonstrate how such matters should be handled, praising the association for listening to stakeholders and responding with concrete measures. He added that safeguarding children and ensuring responsible sponsorship practices must remain central to decisions affecting youth sport.
