October 2025: Malta Marks a Defining Sporting Month in October 2025

October 2025 delivered a landmark month for Maltese sport, with major developments across football, European competition, and several domestic disciplines. The highlight came from Ħamrun Spartans, who made history by becoming the first Maltese club to play in the UEFA Conference League league phase, debuting away to Jagiellonia Białystok on 2 October. Their participation marked a breakthrough for Maltese club football, following a remarkable qualifying campaign that saw them eliminate RFS to secure their place in the league stage.
The Malta national football team also took centre stage, hosting European giants the Netherlands on 9 October at Ta’ Qali. Despite a spirited effort, Malta fell 0–4, with goals from Cody Gakpo, Tijani Reijnders and Memphis Depay deciding the match. The fixture drew thousands of supporters and provided valuable experience for Malta’s emerging players as part of their World Cup qualifying journey.
Beyond football, October saw strong activity across multiple sports. Waterpolo clubs resumed competitive fixtures as the domestic season entered full rhythm, with several youth teams showing promising early‑season form. In athletics, local clubs returned to track competition following the summer break, with junior athletes delivering encouraging performances in early meets. Indoor sports, including basketball and volleyball, also saw increased participation as leagues restarted and clubs intensified training cycles.
