Nick Mercieca makes history at Para Powerlifting European Championships

Para athlete Nick Mercieca has become the first Maltese competitor to take part in the Para Powerlifting European Championships, delivering an outstanding performance in Tbilisi, Georgia. The 19‑year‑old set a new personal best and national record while competing in the men’s up to 59kg category.
Mercieca lifted 114kg, improving his previous best by 4kg, achieved at the 2025 World Championships. His consistency was evident throughout the event, registering nine white lights across all attempts: 106kg in the opening round, 111kg in the second, and 114kg in the final lift.
Competing in the Next Generation (18–20) category, Mercieca secured silver for best lift and gold for total lift, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

He was accompanied by coach Nigel McCarthy and team leader Dr Julian Bajada, Secretary General of the Malta Paralympic Committee. The Committee praised Mercieca’s professionalism and composure, highlighting his dedication to months of preparation.
The Malta Paralympic Committee also thanked Mercieca’s support team and sponsors, including BMIT Technologies, Eurosport Malta, The Radiology Clinic Malta, and SportMalta, whose International Participation Scheme supported the delegation.
