New National Records At Malta Team Weightlifting Event

The Malta Weightlifting Association held its Annual Malta Team Event this weekend at the recently opened National Weightlifting Centre within the Marsa Sports Complex.
The competition attracted a strong field, with a notable presence of young athletes, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity in Malta. The team format meant every lift contributed to the final standings, creating an intense and competitive atmosphere.
Tenishia Thornton delivered a standout performance, completing all six lifts successfully and breaking national Junior and Senior records with a 91kg Snatch, 114kg Clean & Jerk, and 205kg Total.
In the Youth category, Aaliyah Gatt set new national marks with a 67kg Snatch and 90kg Clean & Jerk. Kim Camilleri Lagana, fresh from her European Youth Championships bronze medal, maintained her form with 66kg and 90kg lifts.
In the men’s competition, Rylee Borg took top spot with a 272kg total and 331 points, followed by Shaun Ciantar and Luke Treeby Ward. Promising debuts came from Luke Stefan Micallef and Nathaniel Fenech. Nathan Mifsud led the men’s Youth division, while Emily Livori topped the Under-13 girls’ category.
Iron Titans won the team title ahead of The Unbreakables and PR Warriors. MWA President Jesmond Caruana praised the high standard of competition and the potential of Malta’s emerging lifters.
