New Artificial Surface For The Centenary Stadium

The Malta Football Association has completed a major infrastructural project with the installation of a new artificial turf at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
The surface was officially inaugurated today, 7th July 2025, by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Hon. Clifton Grima, and Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo, in the presence of Association officials and Executive Board members.
Works began immediately after the end of last season, including repairs to the base, shock pad maintenance, and the laying of a new synthetic surface produced by Belgian brand Greenfields.
This high-quality turf is FIFA Quality Pro certified and features advanced weaving technology to ensure optimal playing conditions. The pitch will host its first match tomorrow, 8th July, during a UEFA Europa Conference League first round fixture.
This upgrade marks the fourth time the Centenary Stadium’s surface has been replaced since its opening in August 1999. The facility holds a Category 2 classification and is approved for international matches.
Around 500 hours of annual maintenance are required, and a digital watering system ensures the pitch remains playable during Malta’s hot summer months.
Minister Grima described the investment as a direct contribution to youth and sport development. Malta FA President Vassallo praised the collaboration with the Government and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to maintaining top-level football infrastructure across the country.
