Prime Minister Robert Abela has officially inaugurated the new National Tennis Centre in Pembroke, a €2.8 million project aimed at strengthening Malta’s sports infrastructure and supporting the development of tennis nationwide. The project, led by SportMalta in collaboration with the Malta Tennis Padel Federation, transformed a previously abandoned site into a modern, high‑level facility.

The centre features six Greenset tennis courts approved by the International Tennis Federation similar to those used at the Australian Open along with LED lighting on each court and dedicated spectator areas. Additional amenities include a physiotherapy room, athlete spaces, and federation offices.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s broader investment in sports facilities, referencing ongoing projects such as the Ta’ Qali basketball pavilion, the Marsa athletics track, the Marsa sports complex, and the Gozo Aquatic Centre. He also noted initiatives promoting healthier lifestyles, including free six‑month gym memberships for youths.

Sports Minister Clifton Grima praised the project as an example of how neglected spaces can be transformed into valuable community assets. SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar and Federation President Marc Gingell Littlejohn described the centre as a significant milestone for tennis and padel, serving as a national hub for athlete training, tournaments, and school‑level initiatives.
