National Football Centre Inaugurated Alongside FIFA President

The Malta Football Association marked its 125th anniversary with two major inaugurations that underscored its commitment to the future of the game.
The highlight was the opening of the state-of-the-art National Technical Centre in Ta’ Qali, attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Alex Borg, MFA President Bjorn Vassallo, and Italian legends Fabio Cannavaro and Christian Vieri.
The new centre is set to become the heart of football development in Malta, equipped with modern training, education and medical facilities, as well as a UEFA-compliant stadium.
It will provide a base for youth and elite player development, coaching courses, grassroots initiatives, and preparations for national teams. Infantino praised the MFA’s long-term vision, describing the centre as a symbol of Malta’s ambition to raise its footballing standards.
Earlier in the day, Infantino inaugurated Malta’s first FIFA Arena mini-football pitch at Maria Regina College Primary School in St Paul’s Bay.
The school, home to around 700 children from more than 50 nationalities, was chosen to reflect the project’s inclusive ethos. Part of FIFA’s global initiative to build 1,000 mini-pitches, the facility offers a safe space for children to play and learn, while promoting social integration and education.
Minister Clifton Grima and Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia highlighted the project’s impact on young people, stressing the values of teamwork, respect and unity.
Vassallo emphasised that grassroots development remains central to the MFA’s mission, while the presence of Cannavaro and Vieri gave pupils a rare opportunity to meet two international icons who inspired the next generation during a celebratory match on the new pitch.
