Mtarfa FC Suspended from National League 1 as Club Vows to Fight for Its Future

Mtarfa FC has been suspended from the BOV National League 1 after failing to fulfil its opening two fixtures of the 2026/27 season, in a decision that has placed the club’s immediate future in serious doubt.
The club has now issued a statement insisting that it did not fail to play because it lacked players or had abandoned its participation. Mtarfa said players were ready to represent the club, but a transfer prohibition prevented them from being registered for competitive matches.
According to the club, the Malta FA was aware of its circumstances while efforts continued to settle outstanding financial obligations. Mtarfa said substantial progress had recently been made, thanks to sponsors and individuals who provided financial assistance.
The club described itself as being caught in a difficult cycle: outstanding debts prevented the lifting of the prohibition, the prohibition prevented player registration, and the inability to compete made it harder to attract sponsorship.
Mtarfa also highlighted its long-standing lack of a permanent football ground. An agreement announced in 2021 was intended to provide the club with its own facilities, including a football stadium and training infrastructure.
Despite its suspension, Mtarfa said its priority remains securing the club’s future and finding a sustainable way forward.
