The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) has warmly welcomed the government’s announcement of a new national sports stadium in Marsa, describing it as a historic step forward for Maltese sport. For the rugby community, the project fulfils a long‑held ambition for a dedicated, World Rugby–compliant facility capable of hosting international fixtures and domestic competitions.

The development includes a 1,500‑seat rugby stadium featuring a natural grass pitch, dressing rooms, floodlights, broadcast facilities, and a new clubhouse. Importantly, the rugby stadium will form the first phase of the wider project, a commitment the MRFU has publicly appreciated. The Union also reassured clubs and supporters that all rugby activity will continue uninterrupted during construction, with the land title remaining securely in MRFU hands.

MRFU President Gerald Strickland hailed the initiative as a gateway to the sport’s next stage of growth, including ambitions for 2031 Rugby World Cup qualification. He emphasised the Union’s readiness to collaborate to ensure the facility reaches its full potential.

The MRFU congratulated all stakeholders involved, including its five member clubs, and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting excellence, unity, and progress across Maltese sport.
