Micallef and Fenech shine for Malta at Subotica International Tournament

Malta’s emerging weightlifting talent enjoyed an encouraging outing at the 40th Subotica International Tournament, where Luke Stefan Micallef and Nathaniel Fenech competed against athletes from Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and hosts Serbia.

Micallef, lifting in the 65kg category, produced one of the standout Maltese performances of the event. He hit a personal best Snatch of 101kg before executing a 125kg Clean & Jerk, a lift that set a new national record. His combined 226kg total reflects the rapid progress he has made in recent months and places him firmly among Malta’s most promising youth lifters.

In the 85kg category, Fenech also impressed. He managed 113kg in the Snatch and 146kg in the Clean & Jerk, finishing with a 259kg total, the best of his career so far. His consistency across both lifts demonstrated growing maturity and competitive readiness.
