MFPA Completes First Nationwide Medical Screening for Maltese Footballers

A total of 367 players from 21 clubs across the BOV Challenge League and Assikura Women’s League took part in the Malta Football Players Association’s first-ever pre‑season medical screening programme, marking a major step forward in player welfare and professional standards within Maltese football.

Held between June and August, the initiative provided players with comprehensive medical assessments aimed at identifying potential health risks ahead of the new season. MFPA General Secretary Carlo Mamo described the project as a “significant logistical and financial commitment”, fully coordinated and funded by the Association. He said the positive feedback from players, clubs, medical professionals and the Malta FA confirms the programme’s value, with plans already in place to strengthen it further next year.

A dedicated digital platform streamlined the process, eliminating manual paperwork and allowing clubs to receive medical reports and ECG results electronically, reducing administrative burdens for doctors and administrators.

The programme also featured 19 educational sessions covering safeguarding, nutrition, media skills, player rights, anti‑doping, match‑fixing, injury prevention and first aid. Experts from the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport contributed to the anti‑doping and integrity modules.

The MFPA thanked all medical professionals, speakers and the Malta FA, which made the former National Teams Clinic available for the screenings.
