MEVRICK ZAMMIT CROWNED EUROPEAN BLACKBALL CHAMPION AS MALTA SETS HISTORIC GOLD MEDAL RECORD

Malta has made history at the European Blackball Championships 2025, achieving an unprecedented four gold medals and three silver medals the highest tally ever for the nation in an international competition. The final day of the tournament delivered thrilling victories, cementing Malta’s status as a rising force in the sport.
The highlight of the day was Maverick Zammit’s triumph in the Men’s Singles final. After the disappointment of Malta’s Men’s A Team losing to England in the team final, Zammit bounced back in spectacular fashion. He defeated Anthony Monarch 7-5 in a tense showdown, etching his name on the European trophy and becoming champion for the first time in his career.
Earlier, Malta celebrated three other gold medal wins. In the Under-23 Doubles, Steven Muscat and Nordai Desira clinched victory, while the Under-15 National Team, led by Robert Attard, overcame Northern Ireland 8-4. The squad Jake Castaldi, Nick Muscat, Denzel Falzon, and Dielyn Edwards continued their winning momentum after lifting the Nations Cup earlier this year.
In the Seniors category (Over 40), Malta stunned reigning European and World champions England with a dominant 13-1 scoreline. Darren Micallef’s team, featuring Lee Grima, Raymond Caruana, Chris Tabone, Joseph Tabone, Stephen Mangion, and Antoine Schembri, secured Malta’s first-ever title in this division.
The contingent returns home tomorrow at 8.40pm at Malta International Airport, where fans are encouraged to give a hero’s welcome.
With four golds and three silvers, Malta has shattered records and showcased its growing strength on the European stage.
