Matthew Portelli Finishes Fourth at European Youth Blitz Championship

Matthew Portelli, together with fellow Maltese representative Nikol Borg, recently competed at the 25th European Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held in Rzeszów, Poland, where hundreds of Europe's strongest young players gathered to compete across various age categories.
Competing in the Under 16 Blitz Championship, Portelli produced one of the strongest international performances by a Maltese junior in recent years, finishing in a remarkable joint fourth place among a field of 121 players.
Malta was also represented in the Under 10 categories by eight-year-old Nikol Borg, one of the country's most promising young talents and already a familiar name on the local junior chess scene following several notable performances and achievements in Malta.
Malta Chess Federation President Duncan Vella praised the performances of both players, remarking that "Matthew's result in the Blitz Championship is one of the most impressive international performances by a Maltese junior player in recent years and reflects the dedication and hard work he continues to put into his chess development."
He added that "Nikol's performance at just eight years of age shows tremendous promise for the future. Competing at this level against some of Europe's best young players provides invaluable experience and is an important part of every young player's development."
The Malta Chess Federation congratulated both players for proudly representing Malta internationally and wished them continued success in future competitions.
