Mark Borg steps down after 15 transformative years leading Futsal Malta Association

Futsal in Malta will enter a new era as Mark Borg, president of the Futsal Malta Association (FMA) for the past 15 years, has confirmed he will not seek re‑election at the end of the current season. A founding member of the association in 2011, Borg’s tenure is widely regarded as the most transformative period in the sport’s history, elevating Maltese futsal to levels of professionalism and visibility never seen before.

Under his leadership, Maltese clubs rose from the bottom of Europe’s rankings to the top 12, reaching the prestigious Elite Round. Borg also secured major commercial partnerships most notably with Enemed enabling the complete removal of registration fees for clubs. His era introduced the Enemed Futsal Awards Gala Night, the National Women’s Futsal League, and major improvements in match operations, venue management and marketing.

A long‑time advocate for dedicated infrastructure, Borg played a key role in the recently announced national futsal arena, backed by the Government and the Malta FA. He also served on the MFA Executive Board and the MFA Futsal & Beach Soccer Committee.

Borg thanked all colleagues and stakeholders for their support, expressing confidence that the structures now in place will allow the next generation to push Maltese futsal even further.
