Mario Bonello confirmed Athletics Malta President, with new Council elected at Association’s AGM

Mario Bonello has been confirmed as President of Athletics Malta, securing his first full four-year term at the helm of the federation following his initial appointment during an Extraordinary General Meeting held in August 2025. Antonella Chouhal was also confirmed as Secretary General, with both roles uncontested.
Completing the executive team, Stefania Cilia Caligari was elected as Treasurer, taking over from Darren Micallef who leaves the Council after five years in the post. In addition, Alan Camilleri, Karl Farrugia, Alan Zammit, John Attard Kingswell and Tiziana Zammit were elected to Council as members.
Addressing the AGM, Mario Bonello said that over the past year the new administration focused on building a stronger structure, improving sustainability, increasing visibility and reinforcing the foundations of Athletics Malta, with early results already evident in growing participation levels.
Looking ahead, Bonello emphasised the importance of preparation for the upcoming Malta Youth International Athletics Festival as well as the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games which will leave a legacy in the sport. Secretary General Antonella Chouhal presented the administrative report, indicated key activities undertaken by the federation, and highlighted several successful performances by Maltese athletes abroad. On behalf of the Association, she expressed her appreciation to the outgoing members of Council, Darren Micallef and Vince Farrugia.
During the AGM, members also voted on a series of amendments to the Statute, designed to better equip the Association to meet the realities of the modern sporting world, while simultaneously strengthening its governance and organisational framework.
