March 2025: Malta’s Sporting Month Shines with Marathon Triumphs and Football Drama

March 2025 delivered a vibrant month of sport in Malta, headlined by the Visit Malta La Valette Marathon, which attracted more than 4,000 participants from 63 countries. The event showcased Malta’s scenic coastline and historic urban landscapes, culminating in impressive performances from elite athletes. Cosmas Kigen of Kenya claimed victory in the men’s marathon with a time of 2:24:43, while the women’s race was dominated by Nancy Waigumo Githaiga, also of Kenya, who finished in 2:45:58. Their commanding wins added prestige to an event that continues to grow in international stature. Local athletes Dillon Cassar, Josann Attard Pulis secured podium places.
Football remained at the heart of local sporting excitement as the BOV Premier League entered its decisive spring phase. Title contenders such as Ħamrun Spartans, Floriana, and Sliema Wanderers battled for crucial points, while teams lower in the standings fought to avoid relegation. Strong attendance and competitive fixtures highlighted the league’s increasing intensity.
Internationally, Maltese fans followed the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where Jack Draper captured the men’s title and Mirra Andreeva secured the women’s championship. Their victories added a global dimension to an already thrilling month of sport.
