Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has said he would be willing to return to Old Trafford as part of the coaching staff if former teammate Michael Carrick is appointed caretaker manager.

Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to take temporary charge of United until the end of the season following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim on 5 January. Former Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher is currently overseeing first-team duties on an interim basis and has taken charge of recent matches against Burnley and Brighton.

United are hoping to finalise a caretaker appointment ahead of the squad’s return to training on Wednesday.

Speaking on the BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, United’s all-time leading goalscorer described Carrick as a “great fit” for the role and stressed the importance of appointing figures who understand the club’s culture. Rooney said the club has lost its identity in recent years and believes former players could help restore its values and sense of unity.

Rooney added that he would have no hesitation in joining Carrick’s coaching team if asked, calling the prospect a “no-brainer”, while clarifying that he is not actively seeking a role.

Carrick, 44, previously served as United’s caretaker manager for three matches following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021, gaining valuable experience at senior level during that period.
