Maltese weightlifting enjoyed a highly successful outing at the London Open, held at Crystal Palace, as athletes from the Malta Weightlifting Association returned home with multiple podium finishes and newly set national records.

The competition began strongly in the opening session, with Kim Camilleri Lagana and Aaliyah Gatt both delivering impressive performances. Camilleri Lagana claimed the gold medal after lifting a total of 159kg, while Gatt secured bronze with a solid 155kg total.

Momentum continued in the following session as Nathaniel Fenech added to Malta’s medal tally, finishing third overall with a total lift of 216kg. The standout performance of the competition came from Luke Stefan Micallef, who completed all six of his attempts to claim gold with a total of 207kg. Micallef also set new Maltese national records in the 65kg category, including 118kg in the Clean and Jerk and a new overall total record.

In the final competition, the youngest member of the Maltese squad, Nathan Mifsud, showcased remarkable composure to win gold after successfully completing all six lifts for a 201kg total.

Although Rylee Borg and Tenishia Thornton were unable to compete due to injury, the overall performance marked a proud moment for Maltese weightlifting on the international stage. The Malta Weightlifting Association also acknowledged the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta, which played a key role in the team’s success.
