Maltese Weightlifters Claim Nine Medals at European Small Nations Championships

The Malta Weightlifting National Team produced an exceptional showing at the European Small Nations Championships held in Iceland over the weekend, returning home with nine medals, multiple national records and historic achievements. Competing against athletes from seven nations, Malta fielded one of its youngest teams ever, yet delivered performances that underlined the sport’s rapid progress locally.
The competition opened with an excellent result from Kim Camilleri Lagana, who secured gold in the Junior Female 53kg category with a personal best total of 167kg, finishing ahead of Iceland and Cyprus.
The Junior Men’s team then made history by sweeping the entire podium. Rylee Borg claimed gold with a 278kg total, followed by Nathan Mifsud, who lifted 222kg and set two Youth 65kg national records—122kg in the Clean & Jerk and a 222kg Total, now a national record across all age groups. Luke Stefan Micallef completed the podium with 213kg, also setting a 123kg Clean & Jerk record in both Junior and Senior categories.
Further medals followed in the Junior Doubles, Senior Women’s events featuring strong totals from Tenishia Thornton and Roberta Tabone and the Senior Men’s Doubles, where Malta secured silver.
