Maltese Water Polo players Sanctioned after International Betting Probe

An international integrity investigation has concluded that 11 Maltese water polo players and one staff member committed betting‑related breaches of the World Aquatics Integrity Code, following a coordinated probe involving European Aquatics, the Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU), the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA), AIMS, the Malta Gaming Authority, and the Olympic Movement Unit. The inquiry confirmed prohibited betting activity but found no evidence of match‑fixing or manipulation, easing earlier concerns about the integrity of domestic competitions.

The AQIU reported that none of the sanctioned individuals placed bets on matches in which they were directly involved, a key factor in determining the severity of penalties. Sanctions include three‑ to four‑month suspensions, some partially suspended, alongside fines and mandatory participation in long‑term integrity education programmes. Several players admitted their breaches, allowing for reduced penalties under AQIU regulations.

The ASA welcomed confirmation that Maltese water polo competitions were not compromised, while emphasising that betting by athletes and staff “raises legitimate integrity concerns” and falls short of expected professional standards. European Aquatics stated that the case demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated action between sporting and regulatory bodies in safeguarding fairness and transparency within aquatic sport.
