Stage 2 of the Absa Cape Epic delivered one of the toughest challenges of the event so far, confronting riders with a 102‑kilometre course and 2,250 metres of climbing. The opening 40 kilometres proved especially punishing, featuring a succession of steep ascents that left little room for recovery. Conditions fluctuated between heat and rain, adding to the strain and contributing to punctures and mechanical setbacks across the field.

Epic Team Deloitte (Mark Bonnici / Luke Borg) were the first Maltese pair home, finishing in 5:55:19.8 despite both riders battling a stomach bug that disrupted their nutrition strategy. Borg described the stage as “the hardest race I’ve done,” noting that the pair briefly considered withdrawing within the first 30 kilometres.

Team Kalamba Racing (Etienne Bonello / Marie Claire Aquilina) delivered a composed and strategic ride, finishing in 6:06:10.2 and climbing to 21st in their category. Their measured pacing paid off, with Aquilina attacking late to distance a rival team.

Team Gaudos (Stephen Grima / Brandon Sultana) followed closely in 6:06:54.1. A late puncture cost them time, but the duo remained satisfied with their steady performance and the stage’s striking scenery.
