Maltese Olympic Committee Announces Athletes For Upcoming Games

The Maltese Olympic Committee has unveiled the athletes selected to represent Malta at three major international multi-sport events in 2026: the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the 2026 Mediterranean Games and the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Director of Sport Charlene Attard said athletes were selected according to published criteria developed with the respective sporting federations, based on international performance benchmarks.
Among the squad are several experienced medal winners, including Connie Rixon and Katryna Esposito, both Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, alongside Mediterranean Games medallists Stefan Farrugia and Elaine Genovese.
Glasgow will also mark a historic milestone as Malta fields its first unified Olympic and Paralympic team at a Commonwealth Games. Para powerlifter Nick Mercieca has been selected, highlighting the continued growth of Para sport in Malta. Rixon will serve as flag bearer, while Mercieca will carry the Commonwealth baton.
Malta will compete across seven sports in Glasgow, while the Taranto contingent will feature athletes in 11 disciplines, including badminton, cycling, shooting and wrestling. At the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Malta will be represented in gymnastics, athletics and swimming.
MOC President Julian Pace Bonello praised the selected athletes, saying they had earned their places through qualification standards, results and years of dedication, reflecting the continued progress of Maltese sport.
