Maltese Basketball Coach Gains Valuable Experience in USA

Maltese basketball coach Ruben Baldacchino has returned from Greensboro, North Carolina, following an invitation from USA Select, a prominent organisation within the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball network in the United States.
The visit served as an important opportunity to strengthen basketball relations between Malta and the United States while also promoting Malta as an emerging destination for international sports tourism.
During his stay, Baldacchino toured the state-of-the-art facilities at Wake Forest University, one of the leading NCAA Division I institutions in the country. He met with members of the university’s coaching staff, discussing player development, coaching methodologies, student-athlete pathways and the structure of the American collegiate basketball system.
Baldacchino was also invited to coach and evaluate players at a high-level exposure camp organised by USA Select. The event featured talented athletes who had recently completed their university careers and were seeking opportunities to begin their professional basketball journeys.
The camp concluded with a competitive tournament involving players and coaches from across the United States and Europe. Coaching one of the participating teams, Baldacchino guided his side to the championship game, where they narrowly fell 56-51 in the final.
The event attracted several highly respected basketball figures, including NCAA Division I coaches, European national team coaches and experienced professionals, providing valuable opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange.
The trip ended with a significant boost for Maltese basketball as four American teams confirmed their participation in the sixth edition of the Elite Basketball Tournament Malta, scheduled for 7-11 September.
The tournament will feature teams from the United States, the United Kingdom and Malta, further enhancing its reputation as a leading international pre-season showcase.
