Maltese Athletes Shine On Global Stage At OCR World Championships

This past weekend (11th–14th September), Maltese athletes showcased determination and resilience at the OCR World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, achieving national records, top-10 finishes, and invaluable experience across the 100m, 3km Short Course, and 12km Standard Course events.
Faith Buttigieg reached the Round of 16, running 58.08 seconds before setting a new women’s OCR100m national record of 56.40 seconds. Daniel Vella secured the men’s record with a time of 48.75 seconds. Youth athletes Andy Caruana, Britney Farr, Emily Vella, Keona Mercieca, Kyler Zammit, Luke Pace, Max Pace, Michael Borg, and Sean Porter also gained important international experience in their heats.

Emily Vella made history as the first Maltese U16 athlete to claim a World Championship podium finish, taking 3rd place out of 42 competitors in the 3km race with a time of 21:25. Michael Borg placed 5th (22:51), while Luke Pace finished 7th (23:20). Max Pace ran 21:04 to claim 5th in the U16 category. First-time internationals Keona Mercieca and Britney Farr, along with Maya, Cain, and Hannah Spiteri, gained valuable experience, while Kyler Zammit, Faith Buttigieg, and Andy Caruana delivered strong performances.
Adult athletes also delivered solid performances. Sean Porter completed both the 3km and 13km courses, successfully overcoming every obstacle. Dean Abela Grech finished all obstacles in the 12km Standard Course, while Juan José Bonello competed in both the 3km and 13km races, demonstrating impressive resilience. Dillon Abela and Daniel Vella completed the 3km Short Course, adding valuable experience to their international profiles.
The athletes’ achievements were backed by guidance from official Maltese delegate Julian Briffa, who oversaw preparations and competition strategy. Additional support was provided by Ivan Guaci, who worked closely with the U16 athletes, ensuring the team was well-prepared to meet the challenges of the world stage.
