Maltese Athletes Complete Busy Sunday At Mediterranean Games
Local

Sunday proved to be a full day of competition for Team Malta at the Mediterranean Games, with athletes taking to the track, tennis court and water. The day brought a mix of personal milestones, a hard-fought medal near-miss in tennis, and challenging conditions on the water, as Malta's sporting contingent continues to compete in Taranto.

Alex De Gabriele and Liam Delicata produced a spirited performance in the Men's Tennis Doubles Bronze Medal Match narrowly missing out on a podium finish after falling to Cyprus' Melios Efstathiou and Eleftherios Neos 2–1.

The Maltese pair came out strong, claiming the opening set 6–3, but Cyprus levelled in the second 6–3. A match tiebreak proved the deciding factor, with Cyprus edging it 10–6 to take the bronze medal.

Jeremy Zammit competed in the long jump, recording a season-best of 7.61m.

Claire Azzopardi and Graham Pellegrini competed in the 100m heats, clocking 12:40 and 11:05 respectively. They will return to competition on Tuesday 1st September competing in the 200m heats. Jared Micallef competed in the 800m heats, finishing sixth in his heat in a time of 1:48:06.

It was a tough day on the water for the Maltese sailors, with costly mistakes leading to penalties for both competitors. Racing was exceptionally close throughout, with little separating first from last across the fleet. Racing resumes tomorrow Monday 31st August with the 7th and 8th races for both ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes.

Team Malta returns to action today, with Mark Schembri competing in the Men’s single sculls heats, and Matthew Galea Soler competing in the 400m Heats.
