Malta Welcomes Europe’s Karate Elite to Birgu

Malta is hosting the 12th Small States of Europe Karate Championships at the Cottonera Sports Complex, bringing together eight national teams and 219 competitors for three days of international competition from October 9 to 11.
The championship is providing a platform for athletes to compete in kata and kumite, the two principal disciplines of karate, while promoting sporting excellence, discipline and international cooperation.
The competition features athletes across different age categories, including under-14 competitors, cadets, juniors, under-21 athletes and seniors. Friday’s programme included opening contests and medal events, while Saturday’s schedule featured further individual competitions and an opening ceremony.
Minister for Sport Byron Camilleri also attended the event, underlining the importance of hosting international sporting competitions in Malta and supporting the development of sport at both local and international levels.
The championship has attracted delegations from across Europe’s smaller states, giving competitors the opportunity to represent their countries and measure themselves against international opposition.
Sunday, October 11, marks the final day of the championship, bringing the three-day event to a close.
The organisation of the competition in Malta further strengthens the country’s role in the regional karate calendar, while offering local supporters an opportunity to witness international-level martial arts competition at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
