Malta Weightlifting launched its 2026 season in impressive fashion over the weekend, hosting its first competition of the year at the National Weightlifting Centre in Marsa. A strong turnout across all age groups produced standout performances, with several athletes signalling strong form ahead of international commitments.

The star of the event was 16‑year‑old Nathan Mifsud, who delivered a flawless six‑from‑six performance in the 65kg category. Lifting 101kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk, Mifsud amassed 330 points and shattered every national record from youth to senior level, an extraordinary achievement for such a young lifter.

At elite level, Tenishia Thornton made a successful return from injury, finishing with a perfect series and a 196kg total. Kim Camilleri Lagana followed with a solid 163kg. Promising comebacks also came from Rylee Borg (255kg) and Aaliyah Gatt (157kg).

Strong results continued across junior and youth categories, highlighting the depth of Malta’s weightlifting talent. The national team now turns its attention to the European Small Nations Championship in Iceland on 14–15 March.
