Malta is gearing up for a landmark sporting event as it prepares to host the European Open Classic Powerlifting Championships from 15 to 22 March at the InterContinental Hotel in St Julian’s. The prestigious competition will welcome 274 athletes from 35 nations, all vying for continental titles across multiple weight categories.

Led by Lead Coach Joseph Abela, Malta’s nine-strong squad will take on Europe’s elite in seven categories. The women’s U47kg class will feature Maria Farrugia and Merlina Marinova on the opening day. Shawn Farrugia follows in the men’s U74kg category on 16 March, while Neil Bezzina competes in the U83kg class on 17 March. The men’s U93kg category on 19 March will see Jurgen Dalli and Ian Pace in action, alongside Laura Chetcuti Dimech in the women’s U69kg division. On 20 March, Maria Pezkine (women’s U76kg) and Alessandro Gatt (men’s U105kg) will round off Malta’s participation.

Powerlifting combines three core disciplines squat, bench press and deadlift with athletes aiming to achieve the highest total within their weight class. Hosting the championship marks a significant moment for Malta’s sporting community and offers a valuable platform for local athletes to shine on home soil.
