Malta to host FEGAT World Championship for the first time

Malta will host the FEGAT World Amateur Trotting Championship for the first time on Sunday, 27 September, marking a historic moment for the sport locally. Twelve countries will compete at the Malta Equidrome, placing Maltese trotting firmly on the international stage just four years after Clifferty Calleja won the title for Malta in Italy.

The announcement was made during a press conference by the Malta Racing Club and EquestriMalta, in the presence of Sports Minister Byron Camilleri, who described the event as a milestone reflecting years of investment and development. Over 100 horses were registered by Maltese owners, with 96 expected to race. International drivers will arrive from the USA, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden, while Redent Magro will represent Malta.

The championship programme features eight races, with EquestriMalta providing logistical, financial and organisational support. The event is expected to boost both the sport and Malta’s sports‑tourism sector, attracting delegations and visitors from across the world.
