Malta endured a difficult start to the 2026 Small States Badminton Team Championship in the Faroe Islands, suffering a 4-1 defeat against Greenland in their opening Group A encounter.

Despite the disappointing result, the Maltese contingent produced several encouraging performances, with three matches decided over three sets.

Malta's only victory came in the mixed doubles, where Samuel Cassar and Francesca Clark secured an impressive 15-12, 15-17, 15-11 triumph.

In the men's singles, Matthew Abela battled hard but narrowly lost 12-15, 15-8, 11-15, while Francesca Clark also pushed her opponent to three sets before suffering a 10-15, 15-9, 13-15 defeat.

The men's doubles pairing of Matthew Abela and Matthew Galea went down 13-15, 6-15.

Meanwhile, Lauren Azzopardi and Elenia Haber came agonisingly close to securing another point for Malta in the women's doubles, eventually losing 12-15, 15-9, 20-21 in a dramatic deciding set.

Although Greenland emerged victorious, Malta demonstrated determination and competitiveness throughout the encounter.

The Maltese team will now turn its attention to Saturday's crucial Group A fixture against Liechtenstein, scheduled for 10:30am Maltese time.

Team Malta will be hoping to bounce back with a stronger result and keep its championship ambitions alive.
