Malta stun Germany with dramatic late comeback

Malta produced a remarkable fightback to defeat Germany 29-28 in a thrilling European Championship Group C opener at Sportplatz Welper in Hattingen on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights appeared to be heading for defeat after Germany established a commanding 22-6 advantage inside the opening half hour. However, Malta refused to give up and gradually turned the contest around in a fiercely physical encounter.
Workington Town fullback Zarrin Galea was at the heart of Malta’s revival, crossing for a hat-trick of tries. Debutant Tomas Strickland also made an immediate impact, scoring an important four-pointer as the Knights continued to close the gap.
Germany dominated through the middle with a powerful and aggressive pack, but Malta matched their intensity. Joe Briggs, Xavier Mamo and Mark Robertson were particularly impressive, completing the full 80 minutes and helping the Knights withstand the German pressure.
With just three minutes remaining and the scores finely balanced, veteran Jarrod Sammut produced the decisive moment. The former NRL and Super League player calmly converted a field goal to give Malta a historic first victory over Germany on German soil.
Caretaker coach Kaine Dimech praised his players for their determination and pride.
“It was one of the most physical encounters the Maltese side have ever had to endure,” Dimech said. “But the pride shown in the Maltese jersey allowed the Knights to do something that not many teams have managed to do to Germany on their own home soil.”
Germany coach Bob Doughton admitted his side had been warned about Malta’s resilience and credited the Knights for never giving up.
“Credit to Malta for keeping at it. I warned our guys if we switched off, they would pick us off,” Doughton said.
The victory gives Malta an important boost ahead of their next challenge against Greece on home soil.
