Malta delivered a bold and spirited performance in their European Waterpolo Championship opener, pushing Montenegro far harder than the 21-12 scoreline suggests in a thrilling 33‑goal encounter. Despite conceding three rapid goals in the opening minute, Malta refused to be overwhelmed. Matthew Zammit’s powerful finish from centre sparked a superb response, and the team immediately exposed Montenegro’s defensive lapses with sharp perimeter shooting and clinical man‑up conversions a phase that showcased Malta’s rising competitive maturity.

Their five‑goal first quarter matched Montenegro’s output and left the favourites visibly unsettled. Although Montenegro’s depth told in the second session with a decisive 5-0 run, Malta continued to compete bravely, adding seven more goals in the second half and refusing to let the match slip into a rout.

Several Maltese players stepped up with confident, fearless play, proving the team can trouble Europe’s strongest nations. Even Montenegro coach Dejan Savić admitted frustration at conceding 12 goals a clear nod to Malta’s attacking evolution.
