Malta will kick off their campaign in the World Aquatics Men's Water Polo World Cup 2026 – Division 2 with a challenging opening clash against Australia men's national water polo team on Tuesday evening.

The match will take place at the National Pool Complex, with throw-in scheduled for 18:00, as Malta begin their journey in front of a home crowd.

This year’s Division 2 tournament is being hosted in Malta between 7 and 13 April 2026, bringing together 24 nations from around the world, including sides such as Japan, Canada, Germany, Great Britain and South Africa. The competition represents a major opportunity for Malta to test themselves against high-level international opposition.

The format sees teams compete in a single league phase, with each side playing three matches based on rankings. The top 16 teams will then progress to the knockout stages, where the stakes rise significantly. Only the top two teams at the end of the tournament will secure qualification for the final stage of the Men’s Water Polo World Cup later this year.

Malta’s opening fixture against Australia is expected to be a stern test, however playing on home soil could prove to be a key advantage for the Maltese side.

With qualification on the line and a packed schedule ahead, Malta will be aiming to start strong and build momentum from the very first whistle.
