Malta Seek Strong Finish Against Andorra After Gibraltar Frustration

Malta head into Sunday’s decisive encounter with Andorra at the National Stadium knowing that a victory could strengthen their position at the top of the group.
The national team currently lead the standings with four points, ahead of Gibraltar on two and Andorra on one, following Thursday’s disappointing draw with Gibraltar.
Head coach Emilio De Leo admitted that the result was difficult to accept but said the squad had already analysed the performance and identified areas for improvement.
“We need to see the spaces, take risks, win the 1v1 situations and make the final pass,” De Leo told the media. “We created opportunities, but we were not good enough at converting them.”

The coach also stressed the importance of being more aggressive after winning possession, insisting Malta must look to control matches rather than rely on things going their way.
Goalkeeper Henry Bonello echoed those sentiments, pointing to the chances Malta created against Gibraltar.
“We are speaking now because we saw that they had two shots on target and one of them was a goal,” Bonello said, adding that greater efficiency could have produced a completely different result.
Both De Leo and Bonello emphasised the need for focus and humility, with the team determined to respond positively against Andorra and finish the international window strongly.
