Elite athletes representing Malta in international competitions will benefit from 10 days of paid sports leave, as announced during Budget 2027.

The new measure will allow athletes competing in European or World Championships to take time off work without having to use their personal leave.

Finance Minister Clyde Caruana confirmed that the entitlement will also extend to members of the technical and medical teams accompanying the athletes.

This means that coaches, technical staff and medical professionals supporting Malta's elite athletes during these competitions will also benefit from the additional paid leave.

The measure aims to support athletes representing Malta on the international stage while ensuring that participation in major sporting competitions does not come at the expense of their personal leave entitlements.

The announcement forms part of Budget 2027's measures supporting sport and athletes in Malta.

Further details about eligibility requirements and how the sports leave will be administered have not yet been outlined in the Budget speech.
