May/June 2025: Malta’s Athletes Shine as Global Sporting Drama Unfolds

June 2025 delivered a powerful blend of national pride and global sporting spectacle, with Malta’s athletes taking centre stage. The month opened with the final days of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), which, although officially starting in late May, continued into early June, allowing Maltese athletes to carry their momentum into a historic finish. Team Malta closed the competition with 55 medals, including a record‑breaking gold tally for an edition held abroad. Their performances in athletics, artistic swimming, and tennis stood out as defining moments of the tournament.
The sporting energy continued with the EAP Malta International athletics meet, where local competitors faced elite athletes from across Europe. Their strong showings reinforced Malta’s growing reputation as a host of world‑class athletics and highlighted the progress of the island’s rising stars.
Globally, June delivered unforgettable drama. The UEFA Nations League Final saw Portugal defeat Spain 5–3 on penalties after a gripping 2–2 draw, with Diogo Costa’s decisive save and Ruben Neves’ winning strike sealing Portugal’s second title. Meanwhile, the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States brought together the world’s top clubs in a new, highly competitive format that reshaped the international football landscape.
