Malta Open Their Mediterranean Games Campaign With Strong All‑Round Performances

Team Malta began their Mediterranean Games journey in Taranto with a determined and disciplined opening day, competing across badminton, cycling, skeet shooting and raffa as the 20th edition of the Games got underway. It was a day marked by tough opposition, promising displays and early momentum for the Maltese contingent.
In badminton, Francesca Clark and Samuel Cassar exited in the Round of 32 after a straight‑games defeat to Italy’s David Salutt and Martina Corsini. Facing a highly experienced home pair, the Maltese duo fought hard to raise their intensity in the second set, but the Italians’ pedigree proved decisive.
The cycling time trial saw Andrea Mifsud finish 9th in 21:26.80, with Aidan Buttigieg placing 13th in 21:57.39 on a technical 17km course. With several riders boasting Grand Tour and WorldTour experience, the Maltese pair held their own in a tightly contested field. Bernard Galea joins the squad on Monday for a 140km road race expected to suit Malta’s strengths.
In skeet shooting, André Cassar sits 10th with 68 targets, while Liam Sciberras follows closely with 66 after three qualifying rounds in demanding heat. Both return tomorrow aiming for a top‑eight finish.
A confident raffa display saw Stefan Farrugia defeat Slovenia’s Nik Svara 10–5, shutting out his opponent over the final four ends. He faces France’s Aurelien Corbihan next.
Sunday brings further Maltese action, with Alycia Cassar in taekwondo and Nico Zarb in wrestling as Team Malta look to build on a solid opening day.
